Pedal4Paramedics Challenge is a great excuse for a long ride that also helps the local community.
Pedal4Paramedics Challenge is a 7 day ride through the Darling Downs in Queensland, visiting numerous small towns along the way.
This ride starts and finished in Toowoomba, which is 125km west of Brisbane and sits on the top of the Great Dividing Range. It is also a charity ride, raising funds for the Queensland Ambulance Service Legacy Scheme.
You’ll be riding for 7 days but you do have the option to just ride for 1 day. Each night you will overnight at emergency services centre or town hall. each day you’ll also be popping into local schools to conduct first aid training and CPR courses. This ride is open to everyone (ie you don’t need to be an ambo), however, numbers are limited.
Day 1: Toowoomba to Clifton, 93km, gain 475m. You’ll be heading south via Pittsworth, an easy day to get a feeling of the riding over multiple days. The riding is mostly downhill off the side of the range.
Day 2: Clifton to Warwick, 97km gain 345m. A comfortable day, and you’ll be heading west and then south-east into Warwick. 3 major undulations of 50+m. A steady day in the saddle.
Day 3: Warwick to Stanthorpe, 61km, gain 650+m. Heading South with a generally ‘up day’ with a long grinding uphill climb from the start.
Day 4: Stanthorpe to Inglewood via Coolmundra Dam, 111km; gain 400m. A downhill day overall, and heading west. Longer but still a good day in the saddle.
Day 5: Inglewood to Millimerran, 84km, gain 100+m. A great day riding beside the state forest. You had best hope the wind stays away.
Day 6: Millimerran to Oakey, 111km, 100+ gain. A steady day, with a little effort required before coming into Oakey. North and then east, through the farming fields.
Day 7: Oakey to Toowoomba, 84km, gain 850m. Locals will find it strange to take this route. You’ll head north and then south. 3 climbs to get up on to the range edge coming into Toowoomba.
