Explore the wonders of the Murray River with the JDRF River Raid during the Tour Down Under!
The JDF River Raid ‘Ride 4 A Reason’ is a one day ride that allows you to spend the day cycling along the mighty Murray River! This ride is being held on Day 1 of the Tour Down Under.
The JDF River Raid ‘Ride 4 A Reason’ is being held approximately 2 hours north of Adelaide.
The ride is made of three distances, 115, 82 and 44 km and follows the banks of the Murray River. So this ride is perfect for those who want to do a beautiful casual ride along the river.
Starting from Murray Bridge’s Sturt Reserve, the ride heads north and out of town. Taking quiet backcountry roads, you’ll divert away from major roads and ride as close as possible to the river, passing the small townships of Mypolonga, Woodlane and Caloote, via Mannum Falls on its way into the Steam Heritage River Town of Mannum. You’ll then stop in at Mannum for refreshments before returning to Murray Bridge via the Ferry crossing and the eastern side of the river.
If you are riding the 115km, you’ll then ride further upstream to the Younghusband General Store and turn around back towards Murray Bridge. You’ll then descend the final straight on the Old Princes Highway and over the First Bridge to span the Murray and then back into Sturt Reserve to soak in the river with a well earned cool beverage and a Burger!
The JDF River Raid ‘Ride 4 A Reason’ is suitable for riders of all abilities and fitness levels. This is like riding in the Netherlands ie it’s almost flat. And let’s hope you have a day without wind (unless is a tailwind).
For those of you that are living in the region or visiting because of the Tour Down Under, this is a great one day ride. Money raised goes towards the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund. Your entry fee includes the post ride event, which includes your meal and drinks.
Remember this is being held in January which in South Australia can be extremely hot, so hydration is paramount. There will be extra drinks provided on course if it’s extreme weather, so stay hydrated. After the ride, you can go have a dip in the Murray River to cool off!
