Event Details

Fitz’s Challenge is a tough hill ride through the spectacular Brindabella Ranges.

Fitz’s Challenge has the reputation of being one of Australia’s toughest rides, riding through the spectacular Brindabella Ranges in the ACT.

Held on the in October, it is the date to remember, with the event growing in size in regards to both the number of rides available and the number of attendees.

Never underestimate a ride that has the word ‘Challenge’ in its name, and the Brindabella Ranges are a true challenge.  The Ranges are located on the ACT/NSW border and are spectacular.

This year sees the addition of two more ride variations; they follow the Fitz’s Classic with a kick up Orroral road for the aptly named Orroral challenge with an increase of 20km and an extra 500m of elevation. The shorter variant follows the Tharwa challenge route with a diversion up Corin rd to add an extra 25km with 400m of gain. Either way, more routes for the mountain goats among us.

Fitz’s Challenge offers a total of 7 different routes that will challenge the endurance of riders of any level, the novice to the seasoned rider:

  • 255km Fitz’s Extreme (+5000m)
  • 210km Fitz’s Epic (+4030m)
  • 185km Orroral Challenge (+3450m) New
  • 165km Fitz’s Classic (+2940m)
  • 130km Corin Challenge (+2250) New
  • 105km Tharwa Challenge (+1660m)
  • 50km Tidbinbilla Challenge (+880m)

For those from out of town, there are many a climb to be found, with the original Fitz’s Challenge which is the 165 km and just short of 3000m of elevation gain. It is basically an out and back with a loop at the middle. What a great way to check out the views.

The Fitz’s Extreme is almost Canberra’s version of Falls Creek, with 255 km and 5000m of elevation gain. A true extreme effort of endurance is required. This is not the standard cycling event that you can just turn up to,  expecting to finish. A real training program is required to finish.

The event starts just outside of the built-up areas of the Canberra CBD, 10km by car. Or better still, you can ride out there!

Canberra weather in October is in the middle of spring, however, don’t be fooled as Canberra can be cool. Expect the temperature to range from 5-10 through to 15-20 degrees celsius during the day, with it being more on the lower side once you start climbing into the surrounding ranges. The chances of rain are low however if it does then it would most likely be for the day. Check the weather report before the event to confirm your layering of clothing options.

Fitz’s Challenge is a ride that should be on everyone’s bucket list.

This event does raise funds to help children fight cancer, through the programs set up at The Kids Cancer Project.
