For a state with a small population and only one major city, there’s actually quite a few organised cycling events in South Australia (SA). Their State Group, BikeSA is responsible for nearly half of the rides that are on offer each year. Plus they host the iconic UCI Tour Down Under each year, which attracts world class cyclists for a week of racing.
South Australia is a beautiful state to visit with lots of wineries, gourmet food and beautiful countryside to explore on your bike.
There is some fantastic cycling in South Australia to be had, with a lot of the rides based in the Adelaide Hills or heading south towards Victor Harbour and Kangaroo Island. There’s also a few events in the wine-growing Hahndorf and McLaren Vale wine region. You’ll also find some famous climbs like the old Wilunga Hill, the Corkscrew and then the Norton Summit climb.
You’ll find a mix of one day rides with a range of distances that cater for the novice, the daily commuter and families through to the experienced weekend warrior. Plus there’s a range of multi-day events that tend to start or finish in Adelaide. There’s also some good bike trails in South Australia to explore, especially the Mawson Trail.
