Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival

The Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival is a great excuse for a tropical holiday!

The Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival is a new 3 day cycling event that is being held at it’s namesake town of Port Douglas, an hour north of Cairns. This area is a popular holiday spot, with lots of of things to see and do.

This is your chance to ride along, surrounded by the tropical rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. Perfect for riding along the Captain Cook Highway, going past the Macalister Range National Park.

You’ll find six rides on offer during the weekend of the festival.

The lead up on the Saturday includes the Criterium, The Sprint and the Family ride.

The Criterium is a graded race around the 2.2 km loop near the Marina.

The Marina is also the location for the free Family Ride, so you can do as many laps as you can within the hour before the main event.

The Sprint is set to be a fast charged event along the foreshore over a 250m straight.

The Sunday contains the feature events of the Gran Fondo and the Medio Fondo.

The Gran Fondo has two versions, the 136km and the 100km. The full Gran Fondo has a diversion up into the hinter land for the lovers of elevation. A new Mini 60 km Fondo has been included in 2023, which is an out and back along the coast.

The Medio is a straight one-way track up the coast, starting at Palm Cove, 48km north to the finish. It is better suited to those who want a more relaxed ride whilst searching out over the Great Barrier Reef.

The Gran Fondos, both leave from the Port Douglas Marina, heading south hugging the coast down to Palm Cove and returning with the hills of the Macalister Range National Park . The 136km ride deviates into the Mowbray National Park for some light hills to burn the legs.

This looks like a fantastic excuse to combine a cycling event with a holiday!
