Can4Cancer is a 3 day ride through the picturesque Illawarra region that raises vital funds & cancer awareness along the way.
The Can4Cancer Ride is the opportunity to spend 3 days riding through the picturesque Illawarra region before returning back to Sydney.
The Can4Cancer Ride starts in Sydney and heads towards Bowral via Kiama in the southern reaches of the Illawarra coast, which is about 180km south of the Sydney CBD.
Day 1. You’ll ride from Sydney towards Kiama via Woolongong. Expect undulations along the coastline.
Day 2. You’ll travel south to Bowral. Expect undulations and some longer climbs.
Day 3. You’ll ride through to the CBD. Expect a good climb and some lumps on the road back.
The riders are divided into two groups: the Riders group and the Challengers group. The Challengers group will divert each day to cover more distance. So expect to cover about 250-300 km for this event, with the Challengers group covering the extra distance.
In 2018, the ride was limited to 150 riders and 40 support staff.
The Can4Cancer Ride is held in late October/early November, which is the middle to the late period of spring. Which means, the weather should be in the region of 10 to 25 degrees. Bring your wet weather gear as a precaution.
The Can4Cancer Ride raises vital funds for pioneering cancer research at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. It is organised by the Tour de Cure, an Australian charity that raises money to fund cancer research, prevention and support services and programs. They are based in Sydney and organise cycling tours and fundraising events throughout Australia. There are a series of events to suit riders who live in any state of Australia covering different timeframes. This includes the Signature Tour from Sydney to Geelong this year, the High Country Charity Ride, the Westpac 202, the Woolies Wheels and Walks, the SA Discovery Tour, the LIFE Ride, the Peter Mac Ride, the Can4Cancer ride. That is 8 rides in total each year!
Most of the rides tend to be a multi-day ride or event covering anywhere from 200 to 1000 km.
The Tour de Cure cycling events have some well-known high profile cyclists including former professional cyclist, Jens Voigt, Australian champion rower Drew Ginn, Paralympic Matthew Formston, the professional actor Eric Bana and the Sunrise sports presenter Mark Beretta. These people cycle the full event, they don’t just sit on the sideline and wave you off at the start line. They ride the whole distance with you, so you can get up close and personal.
You’ll find other cycling events, like the Can4Cancer Ride, in our online Cycling Event Calendar.
