Port to Port is a 4 day MTB stage race in the Hunter Valley, Lake Macquarie and Newcastle region

Port to Port MTB Race is a 4 day MTB multi-stage endurance race in New South Wales, around the Hunter Valley, Lake Macquarie and Newcastle region. You’ll have access to challenging climbs, thrilling descents and all the best single track they could find in the area, combined with some spectacular scenery.

Port to Port is held as a race, but is seen as more of a ride, with many riders returning each year to attend.  The course doesn’t require a high level of technical difficulty, which means that as long as you’re reasonably fit and have some MTB skills, you’ll be good to enter!

195km of riding and 3,000m of climbing in total, spread across 45 to 60km each day; the Port to Port keep things interesting with a mix of fast flowing single trail, farm tracks, testing hill climbs and groomed downhill trails – many through private land that can only be ridden during the event.

Stage 1 – Pokolbin, Hunter Valley. This day starts and finishes at Spicer’s Retreat, with 47km distance and 1160m of climbing.

Stage 2 – Killingsworth, Lake Macquarie. This day starts and finishes at Sugar Valley Golf Course, with 46km distance and 550m of climbing.

Stage 3 – Awaba / Watagans, Lake Macquarie. This day starts and finishes at Cooranbong Park, with 60km distance and 1250m of climbing.

Stage 4 – Glenrock, Newcastle. This day starts at Belmont Gold Course and finishes at Dixon Park, Newcastle, with 39km distance and 540m of climbing.

Port to Port MTB Race is a sister event to the Cape to Cape in WA and the Reef to Reef in QLD.

This cycling event looks like a great excuse for a long weekend away, especially with the social atmosphere that comes with this event!

  1. Hi, I’m looking for some advice about the Port to Port MTB Race. I’ve been riding fur a little over a month, and my typical ride is 6-10km with significant (for me) climbing involved. E.g. today was 10km total with over 200m climbing.

I don’t set a fast pace, and I understand the PTP is obviously longer in distance, but how would you rate the physical difficulty? Would it be suitable for a less-experienced rider?

    Many thanks

    Chris Robinson

    1. Hi Chris, at this stage they are pausing this one for 2023, but their are plenty of other ones happening in that area to consider
