The Fraser Coast Gran Fondo
The Fraser Coast Gran Fondo is a great excuse to get out of the house for the weekend from Brisbane and head up to Hervey Bay. In a beautiful region of queensland the Fraser coast line and Hervey Bay is a popular holiday destination, so this ride is a good excuse for a holiday!
The ride and races are split over the two days of the weekend, with the Gran Fondo and Medio on the Saturday and the street criterium and the shorter La Familia and Piccolo on Sunday.
You’ll find the:
- 130km Gran Fondo (Sat.)
- 80km Medio (Sat.)
- 40km Street Criterium (Sun.)
- 25km La Familia Ride (Sun.)
- 13km Piccolo Ride (Sun.)
The Gran Fondo is a celebration of the great long ride. The route starts and finishes at the Seafront oval along the Esplanade. The ride will take in views over to Fraser Island. Along the way there is the odd undulation around the town but otherwise, the route will be mostly a flat course. The details have yet to be finalised however don’t expect to cross or travel along the Bruce highway to chase the hills to the west. Then once the ride is done tell a few stories at the event village with a couple of cooler drinks or a coffee.
For those still wanting to go fast the Sunday is a street criterium around the Esplanade foreshore strip or do what I plan to do which is to grab a seat with a local brew of coffee and watch the fast machines go by. Nothing better.
The coastline is the star of the day, making up most of the courses, namely the shorter/ family rides. The 50km and 100km rides also take in the back blocks around town to return back to the start at the community centre.
Hervey Bay is located north of Brisbane around 290 km, north of Maryborough on the coastline just to the western side of Fraser Island. Your best option to get there is by car, bus or train through to Maryborough.
You’ll find other cycling events, like the Fraser Coast Gran Fondo, in our online Cycling Event Calendar. Enjoy!
